4. LSD

Lucy is one of those gals you need to be prepared for.

It lasts a while (like 6+ hours!) and will tucker you out!

Visuals – Closing your eyes while on acid is something out of another universe.

The scrolling marquis of vivid color and rapidly changing patterns are some of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen this side of reality.

Introspection – If you're hiding something from yourself this is probably when it'll surface.

Why do they call them mind expanding drugs?

Maybe it's partly thanks to the ego-lowering characteristic of these experiences.

The ego is what we erect (huh huh) to protect ourselves from perceived dangers.

In the process we lie to ourselves and create a feedback loop of repression to shield us from confronting what's necessary.

The first time I took Cid was in 11th grade.

Me and my best friend at the time bought it from a friend of a dude we met at a party.

2 little teency squares with pictures on them went down the hatch.

Now I'd been friends with this guy since middle school and we were like brothers.

But over the years, our friendship began to deteriorate.

My perception was that he was becoming a manipulative, condescending sociopath.

And I'm sure he had his ideas about me since there's always two sides to a good story.

I felt like I'd been shouldering abuse from him for the longest time and living in his shadow.

I'd come to rely on him and often lived vicariously through his experiences, on the increasingly rare occasion that he talked about them.

But I didn't do anything about it.

I had no words for what I felt.

It was a like a dull ache in my heart and an invisible roadblock on my life path.

That night we took acid together, it descended on me all at once like an avalanche.

My inner dialogue became vivid and direct.

I'd been avoiding the discomfort of growth in exchange for a mollified existence at the teat of perceived contentment.

Then it became clear: I knew what I had to do.

I said:

“We can't be friends anymore.”

This was hard for me.

I'd become so dependent upon my friend in a myriad ways that it felt like I was personally making the cut with scalpel in hand, sans anesthesia, separating conjoined twins, of whom I was one. Or maybe a better analogy would involve an umbilical cord.

It was – hands down – one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Growth is uncomfortable.

Perhaps I already knew that.

This chemical simply held up a mirror to me and demanded that I look.

3. Marijuana

Marijuana!

Every now and then I have to LOL as I think back upon the day that my dad, fed up with my feckless pot smoking ways, wrote out a very nice contract binding me to never smoke pot again and made me sign it.

I don't remember the fine print, and to be fair, I believe it was meant to keep me from smoking IN HIS HOUSE.

Nevertheless, a goofy stratagem.

I find pot to be extremely catalyzing to creativity.

I basically learned to play guitar high.

Almost the entirety of Ape Vepa's (my high school band) oeuvre was produced in a bereefered state.

I learned to drive high. And boy, I tell you hwhat, I drive like Dale Earnhardt and scared many a girlfriend with it. Secretly though, of course, they love it.

I took the SATs still aglow from serious smokage the night before.

I got a 1330. *Theece ees prroof that American school system stupid*

I believe marijuana engenders presence.

It causes you to fixate so intently on certain things. Sounds, tastes, etc.

Listening to music, for instance, or going to a concert stoned can be an amazing, experience.

Some veeery interesting things have been created by stoners.

Your momma probably smoked reefer at some point and I KNOW you ain't tryin' to talk about your momma! Naw…didn't think so.

Eddie Bravo, who if you're into MMA, BJJ or Chronic, you should definitely follow on twitter. A controversial figure in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, invented and systematized a style of Jiu-Jitsu that doesn't rely upon the Gi (traditional karate uniform) but rather upon practical body manipulations.

This style, 10th planet jiu-jitsu, looks more like yoga than jiu jitsu BUT it works!

Eddie Bravo beat Royler Gracie at the Abu Dhabi tournament, proving that his system is extremely efficacious and progressive.

He's been decried as unconventional.

Well, shit.

Bravo credits much of 10th planet's invention to the influence of marijuana.

I haven't done Jiu Jitsu high but I definitely like the feeling of getting welded to my guitar for 3 hours straight, so I can imagine. 🙂

2. Magic Mushrooms

They're magically delicious

This is the most instructive substance I've come across.

I've always been interested in psychopharmacology and living in Florida as a yout [sic], I was delighted to learn that one could simply pick shrooms on cow patties in the late summer after a healthy rain.

An angry farmer with a shotgun, a black widow underfoot, the possibility of arrest, and a very territorial bull weren't deterrent enough to keep us from venturing onto private property in search of The Teacher again and again!

By far the most interesting experience I've had on mushrooms was a very vivid synesthesia.

Synesthesia is the overt blending of senses.

As I was listening to Viktor Vaughn Vaudeville Villain, I could “see” the music.

This happened at an Interpol concert as well.

I never liked Interpol until I saw their music mapped out in color and patterns before my eyes.

It then struck me as quite logical and meticulous and now I love it because I get it.

Interestingly, I feel like I've tapped into synesthesia.

I regularly perceive things with blended senses (maybe I always have), wine-drinking being a prominent example.

While smelling or sipping some wine, I'll involuntarily experience a kinesthetic/visual reaction.

Shiraz and Grenache tend to produce this most readily.

1. Alcohol

Balla

I've done the stupidest things in my life while drunk.

However, a lot of that can be chalked up to young stupidity, repression and unresolved issues.

And drinking waaaay too much.

A bit older now, I find that a beer or two is a great way to break the ice, relax and get talkative.

Alcoholic drinks also offer a huge plethora of taste landscapes.

Beer, wine, scotch, cognac, bourbon, rum, cordials.

Drinking to get drunk is no longer the idea so I can actually appreciate the taste of a good drink.

****

Seriously though… don't drugs. Drugs are bad, mmkay?
