In this episode Alec Kinnear of FolioVision.com shares how to keep business fun, ethical and rewarding...

Today’s guest on The Membership Site Success podcast is Alec Kinnear!
Alec is the founder of FolioVision and the FV Flowplayer. In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, Alec is a force of personality who joins us today to share his strong opinions on WordPress, Oracle, PASSION, business ethics, overcharging and much more!
This is one of my favorite episodes I’ve recorded and I got a TON of value of it so I hope you will too. Enjoy!

Key Insights from Alec

* Lose the employee mentality. Even if you’re working for somebody else, treat your work in the same manner as you would if it were your own company. In other words, take ownership, take responsibility, deliver quality results consistently.
* Make bonuses a substantial part of your employee compensation. This incentivizes performance and teases out good-on-paper-only team members. Alec offers his team members bonuses that in some cases equate to about 100% of their base salaries! This is one of the means he uses to keep A players on board.
* Something that destroys many software companies is selling their product for a low fee (let’s say $50) and then providing ongoing support for a yearly fee (let’s say $75). What Alec has done to protect against this with FV Flowplayer is to field questions on the forum for users of the free version of the player and reserve higher-level support for paying users only.
* Don’t spend so much time trying to save time (using apps like Keyboard Maestro and Typinator) that you actually lose time
* Don’t bother updating your operating systems constantly. This can cost you a lot of time and create issues with software incompatibilities.
* Don’t underestimate the value of being a middleman if you can retain your integrity and brand
* Don’t use too many tools. Less is more.

Mentioned On The Show
FolioVision – Alec’s boutique web design and digital products company
JustRecord.it – Vic’s end-to-end podcast production company
Topgrading – A proven hiring methodology
FV Flow Player – Alec’s video player
NetFlix in a box – Alec’s video membership site setup service. According to Alec: “I hope to God we never sell this service because the first person who buys this is going to get $50k worth of development for $10k.”
Alec’s has a bone to pick with WordPress – read about it here.
The Checklist Manifesto – a must-read book by Atul Gawande about the power of a simple checklist. Required reading for business owners!
Work The System – yet another game-changing book for entrepreneurs. This book got me to start documenting everything in SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and I haven’t looked back!
Dynamite Circle – A private, referral-only business community of which I’m a member.
John Logar – I saw John speak at the Dynamite Circle yearly event in Bangkok. He has some very interesting things to say about consulting,]]>

Nathalie is the founder of AmbitionAlly, a design-first, user-first company that Nathalie runs with her developer husband (how convenient! I need a transcriptionist girlfriend…) to produce attractive, functional WordPress plugins that appeal to female audiences.
Among the excellent plugins that Nathalie and her husband have authored are PopupAlly, an easy-to-implement, “polite” popup that can double your conversions, AccessAlly, a membership plugin with deep Infusionsoft and Ontraport integration, and others.

Nathalie has been through the Silicon Valley tech wringer AND the Wall Street strainer, after which she cleaved off to start her own freelance business, and eventually her current business.
Nathalie really knows her stuff and in this episode she shares about:
– The trend of women creating beautiful things online…and taking men along for the ride!

Russ is the founder of Design Pickle, a service that provides unlimited graphic design for a very reasonable monthly price.

For a decade Russ ran a full service digital design/branding agency and busted his hump the whole way. In this episode, Russ shares how he crafted Design Pickle to scale from the very beginning, how he grew it a rapid rate, and how he marketed it while having fun in the process (the pickle costume shall be explained in full!)

Today’s guest on the Membership Site Success Podcast is Jane Copeland!
Jane Copeland is a business coach for successful female entrepreneurs based mainly in Australia. Jane started her online journey with nothing but a blog and a whole lot of determination. Vic: Jane, welcome to The Membership Site Success podcast. It’s a pleasure to have you on.
Jane:  Hi, Vic. It’s so wonderful to be here. Thank you so much for the invitation.
Vic: Yeah, it’s my pleasure. You and I have worked together in various capacities and I don’t know why it only just now dawned on me to invite you on, but you’re a very successful marketer and entrepreneur and I think the listeners are going to get a lot of value out of what you have to share. So maybe you could start off just talking a little bit about yourself and how and why you got into online business.
Jane: Yeah, sure, sure. I guess in the last two years, I think we started working together quite a while ago, like maybe it wasn’t even two years ago, but really that my business has really exploded during that time and you’ve really helped me with that, you know, helping me with the tech. So yeah, I guess I got online in 2011, which was four years ago, after the birth of my son Elliott, so when I became a mom.]]>

Narrator: You’re listening to the Membership Site Podcast where you learn from successful entrepreneurs how to build and run a profitable membership site so that you too can generate recurring revenue for your business month after month. And now, here’s your host. Membership expert, Vic Dorfman.
Vic: Jules Watkins from videohero.com is a former mtv and bbc tv producer and director who has directed global hit shows such as the Biggest Loser and Pimp My Ride. For the past three years he has worked online coaching business owners, experts and marketers on how to leverage the power of online video for their businesses via his training courses and membership site. Welcome Jules.
Jules: Thanks very much how are you doing?
Vic: Not bad at all. So let’s jump right into the first question which is, “How did you get into online entrepreneurship?”
Jules: Well, that’s a great question. I got into it because I was looking for an escape hatch. An escape route out of the crazy world of TV. where I was selling my time totally based around you know what hours I worked was when I got paid, when I wasn’t working I didn’t get paid. I was running around trying to get freelance contracts jumping from one to the other and never really had a breather in between to kind of think what I was doing. I found it really hard to plan anything. So, as much as I enjoyed it, and it was fun and it was glamorous and I was getting to meet crazy people. On the other hand I was getting older and kids came along I thought, “ You know what, I’m not really sure I can stick in this forever. What else is there that I could do to leverage my time a little bit better? And so I stumbled, like everybody, where do you start with? You start with Google. I started looking around seeing what other people were doing by the people who had similar skills perhaps and I just stumbled upon people leveraging their skills and their talents and teaching those online. And that’s how it started.
Vic: I really I really resonate with your situation because I was doing a job that I loved which was seeing opera back in the U.S. and even if you’re in a job that you love just the fact that you’re trading your time for money and that you’re always chained to how many hours you work.]]>

Vic: Brittany is as a successful online entrepreneur, who used to work at Google. She has a unique approach to running her online businesses, often combining the sale of physical products and information products to maximize profitability. Welcome Brittany.
Brittany: Thanks for having me.
Vic: My pleasure and the very first question jumping right into it is how did you get into online entrepreneurship?
Brittany: I grew up in a really entrepreneurial family. I think I was really fortunate to have that experience ‘because I was kind of made aware that there’s other ways to live your life than working for someone else.
And obviously there’s nothing wrong with that, that’s a great path for certain people but I think just with that upbringing, I was made aware that I could work for myself early on and so I started thinking that way, so I guess in a way I really kind of fell in to it.
I started my own businesses when I was young. From traveling to shoveling snow and going door–to-door selling home-made candles and then as I got older, Google started getting popular and I just for whatever reason liked the company and I ended up getting a job there working in the Adwords department, so their online paid traffic department.
And I always was there kind of with the end in mind that I would go back and work for myself again.]]>

You’re listening to the membership site success podcast. Where you learn from successful entrepreneurs, how to build and run a profitable membership site, so that you too can generate recurring revenue for your business month after month. And now here’s your host, membership site expert, Vic Dorfman.
Hey guys thanks for joining me for the breakout episode of the membership site success podcast. If you’re listening to this podcast, then chances are very good that you’re an entrepreneur and as entrepreneurs, one of the problems that we face is not just how to create a product, sell that product and profit from it, but how to create a product and sell it such that people are willing to give us money for that product or service on a recurring basis, whether that’s yearly, monthly, by yearly, weekly or even daily.
There’s a business truism, we’ve all heard, which goes something like “it’s ten times more expensive to acquire a customer than to keep him.” Now I don’t know if ten times is an exact figure, but it’s definitely much harder and more expensive to acquire your customer but it’s much cheaper to continue to engage with that customer, to continue providing value to him, solving his problems in exchange for money.
So as an entrepreneur, if you’re going to spend all this time, energy, sweat, toil, heart into creating something a value to solve people’s problems, doesn’t it make sense that you would want to be able to profit from it on a regular basis?
You know, if you write an eBook and you sell it once, that’s it for you and your customer, but the question is, how can you continue providing value on a regular basis and continue getting paid on a regular basis?
So with all of that in mind, allow me to first of all introduce myself. I am Vic Dorfman, I’m an internet marketer and I live in Thailand. And I’ve been doing internet marketing probably now for about 5 years, give or take. And for the last 2 years approximately, I have been helping entrepreneurs and small to medium sized businesses set up their membership sites. Both in terms of planning the site, planning the strategy, setting up the funnels and the marketing components but also the actual implementation and integration with payment processors and other 3rd party software that allows the entrepreneurs to collect revenue on a recurring basis from their clients and customers.
In that time I’ve worked with both big-shots and beginners alike and I’ve seen firsthand what works and what doesn’t in terms of really having a successful membership site and I’ve seen what clients, my most successful and most profitable clients due on a regular basis to bring about their success.
At the same time, I realized that you, listening to this right now maybe thinking that I don’t even know where to begin with membership sites. Much less, how to implement all of these advanced strategies.
